This classic walk along the Great Ridge is one of the best-loved routes in the Peak District. Stretching from Lose Hill to Mam Tor, the ridge offers continuous panoramic views across the Hope Valley and Edale, with a well-maintained path that makes it accessible and rewarding in all seasons.

Distance: Approximately 9 km (5.6 miles)

Time: 3 to 3.5 hours

Ascent: Around 450 metres

Grade: Moderate — steady ascents and undulating terrain

Start/Finish: Castleton or Mam Nick Car Park (Grid Ref: SK123832 / Postcode: S33 8WA)

Route Description

  1. Start in Castleton or Mam Nick Car Park:

From Mam Nick car park (National Trust, just west of Mam Tor), join the paved path that climbs directly to the summit of Mam Tor (517 m). This short ascent is steep but quick, offering immediate and far-reaching views.

  2. Follow the Great Ridge East:

From Mam Tor, head east along the ridge path. The route is mostly stone-paved and easy to follow. The ridge undulates, offering gentle climbs and descents as it passes Hollins Cross, Back Tor, and Lose Hill (476 m).

  3. Lose Hill Summit:

From Lose Hill, enjoy one of the finest views in the Peak District — a sweeping panorama across the Hope Valley, Edale, and Kinder Scout. It’s a perfect rest stop before turning back or descending.

  4. Return Route:

Options include retracing your steps along the ridge for a full out-and-back walk, or descending into Hope village and looping back through fields and lanes to Castleton. If starting from Mam Nick, simply reverse the ridge route.

Navigation Notes

  • This is one of the best-marked trails in the Peak District with clear stone paths and signposts.

  • OS Map: OL1 (Dark Peak)

  • Paths can be exposed and windy — bring appropriate gear and check forecasts.

  • Parking:

    • Mam Nick car park (National Trust – charges apply)

Points of Interest

  • Mam Tor (517 m): Known as the “Shivering Mountain” due to its unstable landslide-prone slopes. The summit offers views over Edale, Kinder Scout, and the Hope Valley.

  • Great Ridge: A natural divide between the White Peak and Dark Peak, offering dramatic contrasts in scenery.

Lose Hill & Back Tor: Scenic high points with history and legend — some say Lose Hill was the camp of Edwin of Northumbria before the 7th-century Battle of Win Hill.
