Trail Guide: Rydal Water & Loughrigg Loop

Explore the Rydal Water & Loughrigg Loop! This moderate 3-4 hour circular walk in the Lake District offers stunning views, Rydal Caves, and tranquil lakeside paths.

Overview: This rewarding circular walk takes in the tranquil shores of Rydal Water and the undulating ridge of Loughrigg Fell. With spectacular views over the central Lake District and accessible paths, it’s one of the most popular low-to-mid-level walks in the area.

Distance: Approximately 9 km (5.5 miles)

Time: 3 to 4 hours

Ascent: Around 370 metres

Grade: Moderate

Start/Finish: Rydal (White Moss car park or Pelter Bridge car park)

Route Description

  1. Start at Rydal: From the White Moss car park, follow the well-marked path west alongside Rydal Water. You’ll soon join the Coffin Route, an ancient track between Grasmere and Rydal once used for funeral processions.

  2. Rydal Caves: Take the optional short detour uphill to Rydal Caves, a large man-made cavern with stepping stones across a shallow pool — a popular feature with photographers and families.

  3. Climb Loughrigg Fell: Continue to Loughrigg Terrace and ascend via a well-worn path that zigzags up to the summit of Loughrigg Fell (335 m). The summit offers panoramic views over Grasmere, Rydal Water, Windermere, and across to the Fairfield Horseshoe.

  4. Descent via Loughrigg Terrace: Descend eastward to rejoin Loughrigg Terrace, a wide, level path that contours above Rydal Water. Follow it east, eventually rejoining the woodland paths toward the start point.

Navigation Notes

  • The paths are generally clear and well-used, but some sections can be muddy or rocky, particularly after rain.

  • OS Map OL7 (South-eastern area of the Lake District) covers the route.

  • Loughrigg has multiple paths criss-crossing its flanks, so a map or GPS can help maintain direction, particularly in low visibility.

Access and Facilities

  • Parking: White Moss car park (between Grasmere and Rydal) or Pelter Bridge car park. Charges apply.

  • Toilets available at White Moss car park (seasonal).

  • Cafés and pubs can be found in nearby Rydal, Grasmere, and Ambleside.

Points of Interest

  • Rydal Caves: A dramatic former slate quarry now accessible to walkers.

  • Loughrigg Fell: A modest summit with superb views in all directions.

Grasmere and Rydal Water: Iconic Lakeland scenery with literary and artistic associations — nearby Rydal Mount was the home of William Wordsworth.
