Overview:
Latrigg is one of the most accessible and rewarding fells in the Lake District, offering panoramic views over Keswick, Derwentwater, and the surrounding fells with relatively little effort. This circular walk starts and ends in Keswick, making it an ideal short route for beginners or those seeking a gentle outing.
Distance: Approximately 6.5 km (4 miles)
Time: 2 to 2.5 hours
Ascent: Around 280 metres
Grade: Easy to Moderate
Start/Finish: Keswick town centre (e.g. near the Moot Hall or Central Car Park)
Route Description:
- Start from Keswick: Begin in the town centre, heading along Station Road and crossing the old railway line path (part of the Keswick Railway Path).
- Join Spooney Green Lane: Just past the old station building, turn right up Spooney Green Lane, a signposted bridleway leading through woodland and then open fellside. This is a steady and well-maintained ascent.
- Climb to Latrigg Summit: Continue up the obvious path as it climbs the fellside, eventually joining a grassy path that contours round to Latrigg’s summit (368 metres). The summit features a bench and is renowned for its exceptional views over Keswick and Derwentwater.
- Descend via Brundholme Wood: Descend along the east side of Latrigg towards the car park at Gale Road (there is an accessible route option here). Continue on footpaths that lead down through Brundholme Wood, rejoining the railway path.
- Return to Keswick: Follow the Keswick Railway Path westward, crossing the River Greta, and return to the town centre via the station site.
Navigation Notes:
- The route is straightforward with well-surfaced paths, signage, and clear landmarks.
- OS Map OL4 (North-western area of the Lake District) covers this route.
- The path to the summit is steep in places but manageable for most walkers.
