Ben Nevis vs Ben Macdui: Which Giant Should You Bag First?

Torn between Ben Nevis and Ben Macdui? This side-by-side guide breaks down Scotland’s two tallest peaks so you can choose your first big Munro with confidence.

Two Highland Heavyweights. One First-Munro Decision.

If you’re new to Munro bagging and looking to start big, chances are you’ve already clocked eyes on these two legends:

  • Ben Nevis (1,345m) – the highest mountain in the UK
  • Ben Macdui (1,309m) – the highest in the Cairngorms and second overall

But which one should you bag first?

Whether you’re chasing bragging rights, epic views, or the most beginner-friendly route to the top, we’ve compared these two giants side by side so you can choose the one that’s right for your first major summit.

Why Choose Ben Nevis First?

You want the highest point in the UK

No question — if you’re chasing stats or a bucket list tick, Ben Nevis is the one. It’s also the most famous, with a well-trodden trail and a built-in support network of other walkers on the route.

There’s a clear path (literally)

The Mountain Track from Glen Nevis is well-maintained, signposted and busy — making it more accessible for newer walkers.

Fort William is easy to reach

By car or public transport, it’s one of the most hiker-friendly hubs in the Highlands, with gear shops, pubs, and plenty of accommodation.

But…

  • The summit is often in cloud (80% of the time!)
  • The path is long and steep
  • It gets very busy, especially in summer

Why Choose Ben Macdui First?

You want big Highland energy with fewer crowds

Macdui feels more remote and wild — especially when approached via the Cairngorm Plateau. You’ll often have large stretches of trail to yourself.

The route includes a second summit

Most walkers bag Cairn Gorm (1,245m) first, then cross the dramatic plateau to Macdui. Two Munros for the price of one.

Unforgettable views

On a clear day, Macdui offers epic vistas over the Lairig Ghru, Braeriach, and the heart of the Cairngorms.

But…

  • Navigation can be very tricky in poor visibility
  • The plateau is exposed — weather can change fast
  • It’s less beginner-friendly without a guide or nav confidence

Which Is Harder?

  • Ben Nevis: Physically tough due to relentless ascent, but technically simple
  • Ben Macdui: Requires good navigation and weather awareness, but less steep overall

If you’re hill-fit but not confident with a map and compass, Nevis is the safer intro.

When to Go

  • Ben Nevis: Best between May–September for clear-ish conditions
  • Ben Macdui: Summer is ideal for drier plateaus and fewer nav challenges

Avoid both in winter unless you have full winter mountaineering skills and kit.

Gear Up for Either:

  • Waterproof boots & layers
  • Map + compass (OS Explorer 392 for Nevis / OL57 for Macdui)
  • Snacks & 2L+ water
  • Emergency shelter / bivvy
  • Peaky Baggers app to track your route and bag your summit(s)

Final Verdict: Which Should You Bag First?

  • Choose Ben Nevis if:
You want a famous first Munro
You prefer a clear, structured route
    You’re newer to mountain navigation
  • Choose Ben Macdui if:
You want a quieter, wilder experience
You’re comfortable navigating in the hills
You’re up for bagging two Munros in one trip

Whichever you pick, you’re in for a legendary day out — just pack smart, check the forecast, and take it all in. Your first Munro is one you’ll always remember.
