Torn between Ben Nevis and Ben Macdui? This side-by-side guide breaks down Scotland’s two tallest peaks so you can choose your first big Munro with confidence.
Two Highland Heavyweights. One First-Munro Decision.
If you’re new to Munro bagging and looking to start big, chances are you’ve already clocked eyes on these two legends:
But which one should you bag first?
Whether you’re chasing bragging rights, epic views, or the most beginner-friendly route to the top, we’ve compared these two giants side by side so you can choose the one that’s right for your first major summit.
No question — if you’re chasing stats or a bucket list tick, Ben Nevis is the one. It’s also the most famous, with a well-trodden trail and a built-in support network of other walkers on the route.
The Mountain Track from Glen Nevis is well-maintained, signposted and busy — making it more accessible for newer walkers.
By car or public transport, it’s one of the most hiker-friendly hubs in the Highlands, with gear shops, pubs, and plenty of accommodation.
Macdui feels more remote and wild — especially when approached via the Cairngorm Plateau. You’ll often have large stretches of trail to yourself.
Most walkers bag Cairn Gorm (1,245m) first, then cross the dramatic plateau to Macdui. Two Munros for the price of one.
On a clear day, Macdui offers epic vistas over the Lairig Ghru, Braeriach, and the heart of the Cairngorms.
If you’re hill-fit but not confident with a map and compass, Nevis is the safer intro.
Avoid both in winter unless you have full winter mountaineering skills and kit.
Whichever you pick, you’re in for a legendary day out — just pack smart, check the forecast, and take it all in. Your first Munro is one you’ll always remember.
