8 Circular Walks You Can Do Before 2pm

Short on time but still want a scenic walk? These 8 circular routes across the UK are all doable before 2pm with an early start.

Sometimes you want a good walk without giving up your whole day. Whether you’re fitting something in before a Sunday roast, catching a train home, or just want to be back before the afternoon crowds roll in, these routes tick all the right boxes.

Each of these circular walks can be comfortably completed in under four hours. They’re scenic, satisfying, and start close to parking or public transport perfect for a morning leg-stretcher that still feels like a proper outing.

1. Arnside Knott Loop

Cumbria – 3.5 km / 1–1.5 hrs

This short hill walk in the Arnside & Silverdale AONB offers woodland, limestone grassland and one of the best views over the Kent Estuary. It’s quiet, photogenic, and takes under 90 minutes, ideal with a coffee stop before or after.

2. Mam Tor & Great Ridge Circuit

Peak District – 4.8 km / 2 hrs

Start from the Mam Nick car park and follow the ridge towards Hollins Cross before looping back. Big views over Edale and Hope Valley make this one of the best short circulars in the Peak. Go early to avoid the crowds.

3. Rydal Water & Loughrigg Loop

Lake District – 6 km / 2–2.5 hrs

A gentle walk with varied scenery: lakeside paths, open fellside, and a wander over Loughrigg Terrace with views to match. This route has a mix of woodland and open ground, great in all seasons and easy to access from Ambleside.

4. Grindsbrook Clough & Edale Circular

Peak District – 6.5 km / 2.5–3 hrs

Starting from Edale, this loop heads up via Grindsbrook Clough before joining the edge path and descending Jacob’s Ladder. It’s a short but rugged outing, with a big-mountain feel despite the modest time commitment.

5. Haytor Circular via Saddle Tor

Dartmoor – 4 km / 1.5 hrs

Begin at Haytor Visitor Centre and make a mini loop taking in Haytor, Saddle Tor, and the open moor in between. The route is short and undemanding but offers excellent granite tors and Dartmoor views.

6. Glenfinnan Viaduct Circular

Highlands – 4 km / 1.5–2 hrs

A rewarding short loop from Glenfinnan takes you up to a viewpoint over the famous railway viaduct. Best done in the morning light before tourist footfall increases. Great views without the big effort.

7. Roseberry Topping & Newton Wood

North York Moors – 5 km / 1.5–2 hrs

This distinctive hill gives a surprisingly airy summit experience for such a short route. Start early from Newton-under-Roseberry and complete the loop via the woods perfect for autumn colours and sunrise views.

8. The Whinlatter Red Route (Lord’s Seat Circular)

Lake District – 7 km / 2.5–3 hrs

Starting from Whinlatter Forest Park, this well-marked loop takes you up to Lord’s Seat with panoramic views across Bassenthwaite and Skiddaw. Varied terrain, good paths, and a cafe waiting at the end make this ideal for a late morning finish.

Summary

Short doesn’t mean underwhelming. Each of these circular walks fits easily into a morning and still offers big views, satisfying summits, or dramatic ridgelines. They’re the perfect excuse to set your alarm, lace up your boots, and still have your afternoon wide open.
